ALPHA DRIVE ONE, consisting of Lee Sangwon, Zhou An Xin, He Xin Long, Kim Geon Woo, Zhang Jia Hao, Lee Leo, Chung Sang Hyeon, and Kim Jun Seo, debuted with their first mini album, EUPHORIA, in January after being formed through competition show BOYS II Planet. They now return with their second mini album, UNBREAKABLE: 少年BEAST, following May’s prologue single “No School Tomorrow.” Released on August 24, the seven-track album showcases a broader picture of the group, moving between the genres of hip-hop, R&B, and pop. With “No School Tomorrow,” the group showcased a brighter, more youthful energy; however, with UNBREAKABLE: 少年BEAST, the group revealed a different side of themselves, embracing darker and more confident sounds while exploring contrasting sides of their identities. The album’s central concept revolves around youth, resilience, identity, and the courage to keep moving forward despite uncertainty.

The album immediately establishes its identity with the title track, “BORN DIRE.” From the opening lyric “Step back, 비틀어진 highway” (Step back, twisted highway) to the repeated “Bo-bo-bo-bo-born, born dire,” the song feels like an unapologetic declaration of who ALPHA DRIVE ONE are. The lyrics are centered around breaking away from conventional paths, refusing to be underestimated, and turning hardship into strength. Lines such as “Born to be high above,” “Reborn in the ashes,” and “깨뜨려, typical” (break the typical) make the song’s message particularly clear: this is a group that is determined to create their own path rather than follow one that has already been laid out for them. The reference to being “reborn in the ashes” is especially effective because it frames struggle not as something that weakens them, but as something that allows them to return stronger. Sonically, the track matches that confidence with an intense hip-hop-driven production, heavy rhythmic elements, and an explosive, performance-oriented structure, establishing the album’s "unbreakable" identity from the very beginning.

“Diamond Hour” reveals a softer side of the group with the hip-hop R&B track creating an atmosphere that feels romantic without becoming overly sentimental. The lyrics compare love to something luminous, with “Diamond 처럼 넌 내 맘 가득 shine for me” (Like a diamond, you shine throughout my heart) capturing the way another person can completely brighten your world. The track uses the idea of a “diamond hour” as a metaphor for a precious period of time spent with someone special. With the lyric “일분 일초 모든 순간이 it’s you” (Every minute, every second, every moment is you), it becomes clear that this feeling has completely taken over. It’s a complete contrast to the intensity of the title track and demonstrates the versatility of the group. Although the world may see these boys as “beasts,” there is still a fragile and vulnerable side beneath the surface.

“One More Time” brings back the energy from the first track, leaning into a darker and more hypnotic sound. The track is built around a minimalist hip-hop production, heavy bass, and sensory FX sounds, and this stripped-back approach works well because it allows the song’s confidence to remain at the forefront. Rather than portraying attraction as something gentle, the lyrics make it feel almost like a game of pursuit. “Keep running, baby, one more time” becomes an invitation to keep following. There is an almost dangerous quality to the song as the narrator repeatedly tells the other person to “따라와” (follow me) and eventually describes the two of them being trapped in an “엉킨 미로” (tangled maze). Instead of the narrator questioning where things are going, they embrace the momentum and encourage the other person to stop hesitating and simply go along for the ride.

“Talk to me” shifts the album into an entirely different emotional, almost dreamy, space. Described as a delicate summer romance track, the song feels like the quietest and most intimate moment on the album. Its central message is remarkably simple: talk to me. The repeated phrase becomes an invitation to open up and be honest about what is happening. Lines such as “Let’s keep it true” and “투명히 비친 맘” (a heart reflected transparently) emphasize emotional openness, while the recurring water imagery gives the song an almost dreamlike quality – “엉킨 미로” (I’m swept away by a wave that is you) turns attraction into something uncontrollable while “빛이 일렁이는 물결” (waves shimmering with light) makes the person they are falling for feel almost otherworldly. The track suggests that the more the two parties talk, the deeper their feelings become.

“OMG!” brings back the carefree energy ALPHA DRIVE ONE explored through their “No School Tomorrow” single. The track is an unapologetically fun celebration of feeling inexplicably happy. The repeated “Oh, my God” perfectly captures that almost indescribable excitement, especially when paired with “느낌표가 떠 내 머리 위로” (an exclamation mark appears above my head) and “뭐든 될 것 같은 느낌이 와” (I get the feeling that I can become anything). What makes this track charming is that even if the narrator’s phone is at “one percent,” their white t-shirt is stained, and their earphones initially fail to connect, they are still able to maintain this mood because they are simply having a great day. The lyrics repeatedly embrace that carefree attitude, eventually saying “빛이 일렁이는 물결” (I don’t know what it is, but I like it so much). It is youthful in the best possible way: messy, spontaneous, and completely unbothered.

The second-to-last track of the album, “Good Life,” centers on traveling and abandoning the pressure to know exactly where you are going. “어디든 drive 자유롭게 떠나” (drive anywhere and leave freely) and “꺼버린 GPS” (turn off the GPS) establish the song’s message: don’t try to plan out everything and just enjoy the road ahead. The lyrics admit that tomorrow once felt uncertain, but now feels “참을 수 없이 기다려져” (unbearably exciting). Rather than allowing uncertainty to become an obstacle, the narrator chooses to move forward anyway, singing “확신이 없다 해도 망설이지 마” (even if you aren’t certain, don’t hesitate) and “겁 없이 한 발 내디뎌” (take a step forward without fear). The repeated “We just wanna feel good” ultimately summarizes the song perfectly. A good life isn’t necessarily one where every destination is known; sometimes it’s simply about trusting yourself to keep going.

The album closes with “WELCOME home.” The track carries a much more personal weight as all eight members participated in writing its lyrics, making it a meaningful reflection of their own experiences and shared dreams. The song looks back at the struggles that came before this moment, opening with “십년을 manifested, now I made it here” (I manifested it for ten years, now I made it here) and reflecting on past pain, prayer, and the determination to finally reach the place they dreamed of. The chorus turns “home” into something much more emotional than a physical destination. “우리란 정답을 찾았어” (we found the answer that is us) suggests that after navigating countless questions and uncertainties, they have found their answer in one another. “Turnin’ pain to flames, lightin’ up all around the world” and “How many times I asked God for this day? / This is the sweetest ‘welcome home’” transform past hardship into fuel for the future. It feels especially poignant because it captures the feeling of finally arriving somewhere you once thought might remain only a dream. The song’s placement as the closing of the album makes it feel like a homecoming, an entire journey they have taken to reach this point.

UNBREAKABLE: 少年BEAST feels like a significant step forward for ALPHA DRIVE ONE because it refuses to define youth through just one emotion or one experience. Instead, they capture the many variations of youth through confidence, romance, carefree excitement, perseverance, and intensity through seven tracks. Rather than feeling disconnected, these contrasting emotions create a fuller picture of what the album represents, and this is also arguably the album’s greatest strength. The “BEAST” may be what the world sees on the outside, but beneath that image are young people still navigating uncertainty, chasing their dreams, and searching for somewhere they belong. In this sense, being “unbreakable” does not mean never feeling fragile; it means continuing to move forward when you are. By embracing both strength and vulnerability, ALPHA DRIVE ONE proves that the most powerful way to break boundaries may be to stop letting others define who you are.
