Debbii Dawson Focuses on the Woes of Dating Men, Societal Issues, and Love in Her Newest EP “Where Have All the Good Men Gone?”

| Debbii Dawson returns with a witty, fun, yet raw EP filled with brilliant melodies and brutally honest lyricism
During my first listen of this EP, I thought to myself that Debbii Dawson’s music has the perfect mix of Sabrina Carpenter-like sarcasm and wit,1980’s to early 2000’s pop sound, all while speaking to an audience of young women who are struggling to deal with all that the world is currently throwing at us.
The first track, “Where Have All the Good Men Gone?”, tackles the theme of eternal dread that comes with being single and dating men today. Debbii sings, “Searched the world, I went far and wide. What I found left me terrified. Made me think Jesus came back and left me behind. Trying to find heaven on Earth, do you think it's foolish? Back of a hearse, still trying to make it through.” Though these lyrics are grim (just like searching for a good man can be) she backs her lyrics with bright and strong vocals along with a beat that makes you wanna dance.
“Money” is the most surprising song on the EP because it somehow perfectly blends upbeat sounds, sarcasm, and real experience and struggle into one. Dawson focuses on the hardships associated with money and needing it for everything, including things as simple as going out to dance with friends. This song almost feels like a rant but in song form. By the end of the song, the tempo slows to a more somber one when she finally gets to the front of the line at the dance club and she is not let in.

“Koolaid” is the first song on the EP that speaks to a specific person. In this song, Dawson is enamored with this person in such a way that it almost feels like she is glorifying or worshipping them - even to a point where her friends have to stage an intervention. This song feels like an homage to the universal experience of falling so hard for someone it begins to cloud your judgment, sometimes leading to bad decisions.
“Lay It All Down” is the first ballad of the EP, and in this track Dawson focuses on a new subject. It seems that she is speaking to a friend or sibling who is quietly struggling and is offering her support and care. Though this song could be seen as a romantic song as well, I believe it is even more impactful as a song about platonic and familial love.
In "Don't Wanna Play Anymore”, Dawson uses the idea of “playing house” as the backdrop for this song about women and gender roles within relationships. The lyrics in this song make it clear Dawson is fed up with being treated like a toy or doll who can be bossed and tossed around. There is a wonderful mix of both sorrow and strength in this song, within the lyrics and the sound. This song transitions into “Mars,” which ends the EP on a spacey, positive note. Dawson sings about the out of this world love she has found and says she would be willing to go Mars with this person if that’s where they want to go. It is a complete departure from the vibe of “Don’t Wanna Play Anymore,” which based on the lyrics alone, this seems like a great thing for Dawson and her love life.

Debbii Dawson was born in Minnesota to a musical family and a couple of her music inspirations include ABBA and Queen. She appeared on America’s Got Talent in 2022 and is now signed with RCA records. She is known for her blend of musical styles, witty yet truthful lyrics, and stellar vocals that almost create her own personal genre. I am very excited to see what she does next and how she continues to evolve as a writer, singer, and performer. I could not recommend her music more!
