Vancouver native and Los Angeles-based indie pop artist Mikayla Geier wrapped her live concert debut, the Diva Tour, in New York City on November 18th. Fans were lining up outside Baby’s All Right on a cold Tuesday night, well before doors opened, buzzing with the excitement usually reserved for artists who had several tours under their belt. The show opened with a performance from hongjoin, and by the time Mikayla entered the room, the crowd was packed tight, ready to join Mikayla at the Diva Club.

The show began with a playful intro and “Dirty Shirley,” moved through fan favorites “Paris” and “Ego Of A Man,” and closed with her biggest hit “Piano in the Sky.” Her performance was beyond impressive, from the way her body moved to her facial expressions, she was captivating the audience with each movement. Mikayla’s background as a ballerina was obvious from how she moved. She was using her body as an instrument for storytelling. Every extension, every turn, and every beat she hit felt intentional and expressive, which was complemented well by her playful yet powerful vocals.

One of the night’s most wholesome surprises came when Mikayla scanned the crowd and realized just how many kids were in attendance, particularly in the front row. She admitted that every stop so far had been 19+, making Baby’s All Right not only one of the loudest crowds but also the most unexpected.

Her playful side was fully on display, too. At one point, Mikayla and her drummer broke into a magic trick, and later passed out fortune cookies to the audience. Even her kettlebell-shaped water bottle, the one she kept sipping from between songs, dangled under the pink lights and matched well with her personality.

Before saying goodnight, Mikayla reminded the crowd that she’ll be opening for MARINA next year, and we cannot wait to see how she grows as an artist. And based on the magic she brought to Brooklyn, the rooms she fills next year are only going to get bigger.
