Pop icon Miley Cyrus has returned with her ninth studio album and first visual album in a beautiful display of artistry and raw emotions, Something Beautiful, released on May 30. Thirteen songs show the many sides of the pop singer accompanied with four videos posted to YouTube leading up to the album release, for the songs “Prelude”, “Something Beautiful,” “End of the World,” and “More to Lose.” Fans have a unique opportunity to live with this album in a multimedia experience, which gives them the opportunity to understand more of Cyrus’ artistry and vision for her music.

Cyrus experiments with this new medium kicking off the album with “Prelude,” with text from her spoken word layered over floral imagery, allowing the listener to immerse themselves in the visual and listen fully to what she is trying to convey. Ever genre-defying, Cyrus sets the album up at the start for fans to take her hand and follow her down her journey of diverse tracks and messages. Her style throughout the videos that have been gradually released over the past few months, including the titular track “Something Beautiful”, give a nod to vintage industry icons, filled with shadowy lighting and feathery outfits. Cyrus delivers breathy choruses wearing glittery lipstick and bold eye makeup, her creative fingerprints littered across each frame.

The lead single, “End of the World”, holds a hazy, summery beat throughout with melodic harmonies that feel like you’re floating in a pool on a floaty, icy beverage in hand. The lyrics yearn for going on adventures with someone as “you know tomorrow isn’t comin’ for sure.” The layered bridge towards the end of the track bookends the song perfectly, leaving the lyrics on repeat in the listener’s mind long after Spotify has faded into the next track.

“More to Lose” is a personal favorite on the album with heavy, melodic piano and Cyrus’s classic vocals singing heart-wrenching lines like, “I knew someday that one would have to chose, I knew someday you’d do what I couldn’t do, I just thought we had more to lose.” The emotions that bleed out of this track feel tangible for the listener, Cyrus pushing the tempo forward and drawing us into a moment that feels tender and painful.

Another uptempo song pointing to themes of love and relationships is “Easy Lover,” jazzy and filled with experimental sounds and string accompaniments. The pulsing baseline will have listeners shimmying their shoulders in time with the music. Selfishly, I can’t help but wonder what this track would sound like live from one of Cyrus’ infamous Backyard Sessions that fans yearn for the artist to revive.

While Cyrus has become a household name in the industry for her talent and larger than life personality, recognition by way of awards did not come easy. Cyrus only just received her first Grammy Award in 2024 for her chart-topping hit “Flowers” earning her wins for Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year. Longtime fans and followers of the singer will acknowledge that this felt like a true full circle moment after years of transformation in the public eye. She told a story about a child gifted a net, desperate to catch a butterfly for his birthday. The moment they finally catch the beautiful insect is when it lands on the tip of their nose. Cyrus called her song “Flowers” her butterfly, feeling so much elation and relief at finally receiving her flowers in her own moment of chrysalis.

Cyrus’ visual film Something Beautiful will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 6, co-directed by the artist herself, and will be shown for one night only in cinemas nationwide on June 12. With no tour on the horizon at this time, the visual film is a unique opportunity for fans to experience Cyrus’ new album in community on the big screen.
